Token Efficiency: Open-Weights vs Frontier Hosted APIs
The top market brief says self-hosting an open-weights model becomes 4.2× cheaper than paying a hosted API once daily volume passes 500K tokens. This calculator lets you test that with your own prices. The answer depends almost entirely on which API you compare against and what the server costs, including your time.

Hosted API
Self-hosted open weights
–API cost per month
–Self-host cost per month
–Which is cheaper, by how much
–Breakeven daily volume
–Servers needed at this volume

Claimed by the proposal, not verified
"Self-hosting becomes 4.2× more cost effective once daily volume exceeds 500K tokens." The brief gives no prices, model, hardware or method. With the example frontier prices here, 500K tokens a day costs about $90 a month on the API, less than most GPU rentals before counting anyone's time.
A fixed multiplier cannot be right in general. Self-hosting is a mostly fixed cost and the API is a per-token cost, so the ratio keeps changing with volume.
The prices preloaded here are round example numbers, not current quotes from any provider. Replace them with your invoices.
What to try
Keep the frontier scenario and raise daily tokens until the lines cross. That crossing is the real breakeven for those prices.
Set ops hours to 0. This is the comparison most cost briefs quietly make. Then set it back to something honest.
Switch to the budget scenario. A small model on a cheap VPS can undercut the API on paper, but it is a weaker model; this page does not price quality.
Lower sustained tokens/sec. CPU-only servers hit their ceiling fast, and a second server doubles the fixed cost.
For a real answer, pull a month of actual token counts per agent from the API invoices and plug in the fleet's real VPS prices.
